1.As of enforcement of above Law, the following three guidelines for ensuring safety use of LMOs were lapsed.
(a) Guidelines for Application of Recombinant DNA Organisms in Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries, the Food Industry and Other Related Industries;
(b) Guidelines for Industrial Application of Recombinant DNA Technology;
(c) Guidelines for Recombinant DNA Experiments;
LMO being used upon enforcement of the Law is, for 6 months from the date of enforcement, regarded as having obtained approval under the Law (see Article 2, Supplementary Provisions of the Law)
2.Following the adoption of the Nagoya-Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety in 2010, Japan amended the Law Concerning the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biological Diversity through Regulations on the Use of Living Modified Organisms in order to implement the Supplementary Protocol domestically. The amendment introduced a system under which the competent authority may order measures necessary to restore damage to biodiversity caused by the use of living modified organisms.
The amended law entered into force on 5 March 2018.
